What is Refractive Surgery
Refractive surgery is a series of procedures used to correct refractive errors in the eye. is a general term that includes surgical techniques. These defects are usually myopia (far visual impairment), hyperopia (near vision impairment) and astigmatism (irregular shape of the cornea). Refractive surgery, glasses or aims to reduce or eliminate the use of contact lenses.

Methods of Refractive Surgery
Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK): This is the most commonly used is a refractive surgery method. The stroma, the inner layer of the cornea, is removed with a laser shaping and correction of  refractive defects. A flap is created, removed, laser is applied and then the flap is placed back in place.
Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis (LASEK): In this method, the top layer of the cornea the epithelium is removed, the cornea is reshaped and then the epithelium is is placed. Surface Ablation (PRK, Epi-LASIK): In these methods, the top layer of the cornea the epithelium is completely removed and then the cornea is reshaped. 


Who is Suitable for Refractive Surgery?
Suitable candidates for refractive surgery are generally older than 18 years of age, eye numbers are stable and have a certain corneal thickness. Also, pregnant or lactating women, those with certain eye diseases or certain health conditions may not be suitable for refractive surgery.
